Barry Kennedy re-elected President of Unifor National Council 4000
December 29, 2016
On November 25, 2016, at the opening of the 6th convention of National Council 4000 in Winnipeg, nominations were held for the positions of President and Secretary Treasurer of Unifor Council 4000.
Current President Barry Kennedy was nominated by Local 4001 President David Judge for the position of President. Following the call for other nominations for President by Unifor National Representative Bob Fitzgerald, Brother Fitzgerald announced that Brother Kennedy was duly acclaimed and thus re-elected as the President of National Council 4000 for a fourth term. Kennedy accepted the nomination and thanked his nominator for his “very kind words and his unconditional support”, and said it would be his pleasure to serve a fourth term as President. President Kennedy’s new three-year term commences in January 2017 and runs until January 2019. His re-election makes him the longest serving President of National Council 4000 since its formation in November 1997. Prior to Barry Kennedy, Rick Johnston, who was elected as the first President of Council 4000, served 7-years as President from November 1997 to January 2005, Bob Fitzgerald was elected as the second President in January 2005 and served for 4-years from 2005 to September 2009 at the time of his appointment as a National Representative with CAW (now Unifor). |
Kennedy has served a little over 7-years in his role as President and said he is very honoured and humbled by the show of support and all the kind words that were expressed to him from the many delegates and his peers during the convention. “I will continue to work to the best of my abilities to represent our membership from all across Canada. I do not take my role, responsibilities and trust from our membership and elected officers lightly”, Kennedy says. Brother Kennedy comes out of CN where he hired on in Winnipeg in 1981 and transferred to Edmonton in June 1995 when CN consolidated its Western Crew Management Centre in Edmonton. Prior to being elected President, Kennedy served more than 9-years as the Regional Representative for the Council’s Mountain Region (Local 4001), servicing members at CN, CNTL and CN Savage Alberta Railway. He also served as the President and Local Chairperson of CAW Local 4031 before the formation of Council 4000, which serviced members at CN and VIA Rail Canada. He continues to be based in Edmonton, Alberta.
