Unifor Council 4000 prepares for its 6th Convention to be held in Winnipeg, November 25-26, 2016
November 19, 2016
Unifor National Council 4000 is preparing for its 6th triennial convention to be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the historic Fort Garry Hotel on November 25 and 26, 2016. The purpose for these conventions is to discuss the various issues facing the membership from coast-to-coast-to-coast, collective bargaining, and debating and voting on resolutions pertaining to amendments to the bylaws of Unifor National Council 4000.
Past conventions have been held at the Unifor Family Education Centre (then CAW) in Port Elgin, Ontario (Founding Convention) in 1997; Montreal, Quebec in 2001; Toronto, Ontario in 2004; Montreal, Quebec in 2007; Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2010; and, Edmonton, Alberta in 2013. Some 50 delegates and more than 25 guests and observers will be attending this convention. |
Unifor National Council 4000 President Barry Kennedy said its been his desire to have a convention in Winnipeg ever since he was first elected the President of Council 4000 in 2008. "You will not find a better labour or railway town than Winnipeg", says Kennedy. "Of course another reason is that this is where I was born and raised. But its a city rich in history, and we're holding it at one of Canada's beautiful grand railway hotels, the Fort Garry." The Fort Garry was built by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, which later became Canadian National Railway. "This is our second convention in Western Canada in a city that was an important gateway to Canada's west and the first stop for many immigrants that settled in Western Canada."
Danny Andru, Secretary Treasurer of Unifor National Council 4000, says; "Winnipeg is situated in the centre of our country and played an integral part of our country's transportation system in the early part of the 20th century, and continues to this day. Andru went on to say; “Obviously, this is a good place to hold a convention of a Local Union that is made up largely of workers employed in the transportation sector. I share Brother Kennedy's enthusiasm and we are looking forward to our convention in Winnipeg."
On the final day of the convention (November 26th), nominations are called open for the positions of National Council 4000 President and Secretary Treasurer. Additionally, a new National Election Committee (NEC) for Council 4000 is also nominated and elected by Regional Local Caucuses.
