Unifor Bargaining Update: CN Mechanical and CN Savage Alberta Railway
November 4, 2014
CN Rail – Local 100
The union bargaining committee met in Montreal on October 20th though to 24th inclusive with CN Rail representatives for the first formal bargaining sessions since the official opening in September.
The union committee spent some time introducing the membership proposals to the corporations and engaged them in some meaningful dialogue on these important matters. Local 100 President Ken Hiatt began the overview by stating that while the union bargaining committee is looking forward to working with CN to negotiate a new collective agreement that is positive for both sides, there are a number of hurdles that must be resolved in this round of negotiations. Our discussions with the corporation were cordial and we have agreed to resume negotiation discussions the week of November 16th in Montreal.
We have also set aside November 3rd to 6th inclusive to meet with the corporation in Toronto, to focus on resolving the grievance load and to address the assessment and levels of discipline. Our members on the shop floor absolutely deserve to be treated fairly and equitably and we will be insistent in our message to CN Rail that fair treatment of workers is fundamental in the workplace.
CN Alberta Savage Rail
The bargaining committee continues to meet with CN Savage Alberta Rail with the view of concluding negotiations on a new collective agreement for our 60 members who work as Locomotive Engineers and Conductors.
The priority for this round of bargaining was to move these members from a DC pension plan into the CN DB Pension Plan, which CN was reluctant to do. The pension issue has finally been resolved, but the bargaining committee is now being challenged on demands by CN on greater flexibility based on the significant increase in rail traffic in northwestern Alberta that adversely affects the scheduled work environment enshrined in the collective agreement. Future bargaining dates have not yet been confirmed however we will continue to keep the membership updated.
