Can you spot the sexism?
November 21, 2014
Unifor has launched a series where people are being asked to spot sexism in illustrated snapshots. Sexism, or gender discrimination, is a prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender.
Sexist attitudes may stem from traditional stereotypes of gender roles, and may include the belief that a person of one sex is intrinsically superior to a person of the other. Extreme sexism may foster sexual harassment, rape and other forms ofsexual violence. Unfortunately, in 2014, women still face various forms of sexism.
Violence against women isn’t a series of isolated incidents, it’s a systemic issue that is rooted in sexism, as well as racism, homophobia, transphobia and other forms of discrimination and oppression. It’s all connected. We can’t end violence against women without turning our attention to these issues.
Over the next three weeks, Unifor will be posting weekly updates – every Tuesday and Thursday until December 4 – of illustrated snapshots where you will be asked to spot the sexism. Once you spot it, it’s up to each of us to put a stop to it in real life.
