Contract negotiations scheduled to continue for Unifor members at CN Savage Alberta Railway
September 29, 2014
The Unifor Council 4000 CN Savage Alberta Railway Bargaining Committee is scheduled to meet with CN on October 22 and 23 in Edmonton in hopes of concluding negotiations on a new collective agreement for our almost 60 members employed as Locomotive Engineers and Conductors whom are members of Unifor Local 4001. Talks stalled over the Union’s demand to move our members into the CN Pension Plan, a Defined Benefit (DB) Pension Plan from their current Defined Contribution (DC) Plan.
Unifor Council 4000 President Barry Kennedy has said that the membership has been incredibly patient and understanding with the delays to this point, but that they understand the situation.
“The DB Pension Plan is the top issue that we came to the bargaining table with this time around”, said Kennedy. “The other challenge we have is that the Company is wanting understandings on existing language within the collective agreement in how to manage and administer payments to train crews, changes that members will view as concessionary,” explained Kennedy. “We still have a lot of work to do but I am going to remain optimistic that we will walk away with a tentative deal that we will be satisfied to take to our membership to ratify. We will negotiate for 16-hours each day if we have to,” adds Kennedy.
The members have been without a contract since December 31, 2012.
