CN serves notice to lock-out Unifor members
February 20, 2015
CN issued notice today – February 20, 2015 - at 16:00 (4 p.m.) Eastern Time that it would be locking out 4,800 Unifor members, including Unifor National Council 4000 members governed under Agreements 5.1, 5.1 Supplemental (Intermodal), 5.4, CNTL and CN Savage Alberta Railway, as of Monday at 23:00 (11 p.m.) local time. The parties have been negotiating for five months.
Good progress has been made on non-economic matters, but in terms of economic issues, CN is only offering what they negotiated with two other Unions, agreements that fall short of the benefit improvements that our Unifor members asked their bargaining committees to negotiate.
Unifor is urging CN to return to the bargaining table. It was CN who abruptly halted negotiations on Sunday night, February 15th, after tabling its one and only economic offer - which did not address any of the expectations of our members. We heard from the Unifor membership at meetings and through the pre-bargaining surveys about what they want to see in your new collective agreement.
Unifor will now begin preparations for a lock-out. The union will be conducting a series of information meetings over the coming days. We will communicate the dates and times as more information becomes available.
The Unifor Council 4000 Bargaining Committees has expressed to CN that we wish to return to the bargaining table and commence negotiations in reaching a fair and reasonable settlement.
We will continue to communicate as the situation changes. Thank you for your ongoing support for your respective bargaining committees.
