We say goodbye to Jean Simard and welcome Kasang Kashi as new Local 4004 President
February 28, 2015
Unifor Local 4004 held their General Membership meeting on Tuesday evening, February 3rd at the Hilton Place Bonnaventure in Montreal, Quebec. A variety of topics were discussed, including an update to the membership by National Representative Myriam Germain as to the status of negotiations with CN and CNTL. One important matter of business that had to be dealt with was electing a new Local President to replace outgoing President Jean Simard, who is retiring from CN this month.
We are pleased to announce that Local 4004 member Kasang Kashi, who was the Recording Secretary of the Local, was acclaimed as the new President of the Local. Sister Kashi is employed with VIA Rail Canada. In addition to her role as the Recording Secretary of Local 4004, she also served on the Unifor National Council 4000 Bylaws Committee during the last Council 4000 Convention held in Edmonton in October 2013. Council 4000 President Barry Kennedy and Secretary Treasurer Heather Grant congratulated Sister Kashang on her new role, and welcomed her to the National Council 4000 Executive Board, representing the St. Lawrence Region. |
Kennedy said that it is great to see another Sister, another woman, hold a position within our Council. Jennifer Murray was recently appointed as the interim Regional Representative for Council 4000's Atlantic Region servicing members of Local 4005.
As we welcome Kasang onboard, it’s with some sadness we say goodbye to Brother Jean Simard, who was elected as the President of Local 4004 in the spring of 2013. Jean brought a high degree of enthusiasm to his role as President and always displayed a high level of professionalism. Brother Simard still plans on being active with the Local despite his retirement from CN and departure as Local President, perhaps as a Retired Worker on the Local's Executive and Retired Worker's Chapter.
We thank Jean Simard for his years of service with the Union, both Unifor and predecessor Unions - CAW and CBRT&GW. All the best in your retired years Brother Simard, and your future endeavours in the years that follow.
