Unifor National Council 4000/Local 4001 Support Locked-Out CUPE SRY Members
January 31, 2015
Southern Railway of British Columbia (SRY), which is based in New Westminster, BC and provides rail services to the lower mainland and Fraser Valley, locked out 126 workers, members of CUPE Local 7000 on January 5, 2015. Eight members from COPE 378, who are also employed at SRY, have stood in support of the locked-out members of CUPE. SRY Managers have been operating trains for a service area that stretches from Vancouver to Chilliwack.
CUPE 7000 President Bill Magri expressed public safety concerns of inexperienced managers operating trains. His concerns held true as evident by this video of a train operated by inexperienced managers passing a crossing on a dark foggy night without the lights of the locomotive turned on.
The lockout was preceded by a final offer vote that the CUPE membership rejected by 91 percent. SRY tabled a full concessionary package and was unwilling to address health and safety issues around fatigue and overtime, wages and working conditions.
COPE 378 President David Black, in a letter to the editor of the New Westminster Record, takes on a misleading claim made by SRY in a January 7th article where they suggest they’re a “small, local company,” when in fact they’re owned by one of the richest men in the U.S. Read it here >> Southern Railway is no victim—David Black
Unifor Council 4000 President Barry Kennedy sent the following letter of support to the locked-out CUPE 7000 membership at SRY on behalf of National Council 4000 and Local 4001. Read it here!
This week, members of Unifor National Council 4000/Local 4001 who are employed with CN, joined the locked-out CUPE members at one of the SRY picket lines.

We would kindly ask if our Unifor membership could take some time out of their day and visit one of the CUPE SRY picket lines and show support and solidarity to these railway workers, locked-out of work unfairly by SRY.
