Unifor - VIA Rail Bargaining Update
May 13, 2016
The Unifor VIA Rail Bargaining Committees for Agreements 1 and 2 (Council 4000) and Agreement 3 (Local 100) representing more than 2,200 workers, resumed negotiations with the Corporation on May 2nd in Montreal. The week of meetings were first sessions held with the assistance of conciliators from Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services (FMCS). Talks continue to progress slowly.
Council 4000 will be meeting again with VIA during the week of May 16th. Local 100 will be scheduling dates in early June. Both committees will work towards attaining a fair and reasonable settlement with the corporation ahead of the strike/lockout deadline of 00:01 hours local time on Monday, June 13, 2016.
The union will begin preparations necessary in advance of conducting strike votes across the country. Dates, times and locations of strike vote meetings for the respective Agreements will be announced to the membership once confirmed. A strong strike mandate will assist your bargaining committees in showing the corporation that we have the full support of the membership in attaining a fair and reasonable contract. It is critical that our members support their bargaining committees.
We will continue to provide updates as information becomes available. As is sometimes the case, rumours circulate in the system concerning negotiations. We want to emphasize the importance that should you have any questions concerning negotiations, these should be directed to members of your bargaining committee in your respective locations.
We remain optimistic that we can reach a settlement which you will support.
In Solidarity,
