Unifor Council 4000/Local 4001 and Rocky Mountain Catering Members Stay Together
January 31, 2015
Recently, a small group of Unifor Council 4000 and Local 4001 members at Rocky Mountain Catering Co. (RMCC) started a petition to decertify from the Union. For smaller bargaining units, these actions are normally closely monitored by the employer, perhaps with them suggesting to employees that they don’t need the Union, 'we will listen to your concerns and give you the same as you do through the right of collective bargaining, and you end up gaining even more by not having to pay Union dues anymore.'
Over the last couple of months, the Union met with the membership in Kamloops, B.C. and conducted a telephone canvass to explain to the members the risks involved with decertification and the benefits of being Union members. Since first organizing these workers, who work as cooks and catering staff at the Company, history has shown that their working conditions, wages and benefits have improved based on their affiliation with the Union and their right of collective bargaining.
After a vote taken by the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) on January 26, 2015, we are pleased to announce that the membership voted in favour of remaining members with Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union.
We wish to thank Local 4001 Chairpersons Herc Kallergis and Dave Hansen for the great work they put into this initiative. Regional Representative Ron Shore was also instrumental in organizing the Union’s efforts and also met and spoke with several RMCC members.
We also wish to thank RMCC Local Chairperson Melissa Rekve for all of her efforts. Unfortunately, she has decided not to return to RMCC once the winter season shutdown comes to an end. This this means that Local 4001 is seeking nominations for a new Local Chairperson to represent the membership at Rocky Mountain Catering Co. We wish Sister Rekve well in her future endeavours and thank her for her service to the members, Unifor Local 4001 and Council 4000.
