All of the five Regional Local Unions of Unifor National Council 4000 have completed their Local Elections, with Local 4001 wrapping their's up on Friday, July 15. There was no change to the four other Locals, with the present Local Presidents and Secretary Treasurers all being acclaimed.

We say goodbye and thank you to John Dowell and Tony Andrzejewski
It comes with sadness that we say goodbye to two long-time leaders of Unifor Local 4001, as President John Dowell and Secretary Treasurer Tony Andrzejewski will both retire from the Union at the end of July. In addition to their roles with Local 4001, both Brothers Dowell and Andrzejewski worked for many years at CN’s Walker Yard Diesel Shop in Edmonton. Both were Locomotive Hostlers.
John Dowell has been the President of Local 4001 since 2009. Prior to that, he served as the Unit Local Chairperson for the Local’s Alberta Mechanical/Intermodal Unit since 2000. John gave us quite a scare last fall when on October 3, 2015, he suffered an aneurysm in his abdomen and was rushed to hospital where was operated on three times in a week period. He remained in ICU at Edmonton’s Grey Nuns Hospital for over a month, and had to remain hospitalized until January 8, 2016. We were close to losing him and this health scare lead Brother Dowell to the decision in retiring from CN and his activism in our Union. He has been slowly recovering and gaining his strength back, enjoying quality time with his wife Deb and their close family and friends.

Tony Andrzejewski has been the only Secretary Treasurer of Local 4001 since its inception in November 1997, the same time that Council 4000 was formed. Prior to becoming the Financial Secretary of CAW Local 4001 in 1997, Brother Andrzejewski served for many years as Financial Secretary of CAW Local 4079, and before that, Local 79 of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway and General Workers Union (CBRT&GW). This was before the CBRT&GW merged with the CAW in June 1994. Brother Andrzejewski also served several stints as Local Chairperson. He was elected as the National Election Chairperson for Council 4000 representing Local 4001. Tony has also volunteered with several charitable organizations and community groups, including as President of Edmonton’s Rio Terrace Community League.

Personally, I will miss the solidarity of both Tony and John, who I have worked with for many, many years. But despite their departure for retirement, we will always remain friends.
On behalf of Local 4001, as well as the Executive Board of Unifor National Council 4000, we wish Brothers Dowell and Andrzejewski all the best in their future endeavours, and good health and prosperity through many years of well earned retirement. Solidarity Brothers, and thank you for your years of service and dedication to our Union and the labour movement.
