Unifor Rail Sector Changes
June 30, 2017
Over the past few months, servicing within Unifor’s Rail sector has seen a couple of changes, and more is to come over the next couple of months.
On Friday, February 10, 2017, Unifor National Representative and Director of Rail, Brian Stevens, retired from Unifor and a lengthy career with the Union dating back to the CAW days. Brian came out of Ontario Northland Railway where he served as the President of Local 103 before being appointed to the National staff of the Union. Following Brother Stevens retirement announcement, he did not stay retired very long. The following Monday, Brian was appointed to a role with Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services (FMCS). We wish Brother Stevens success in his new role and career with FMCS and thank him for his tremendous contributions to our Union and the many members he has serviced over his lengthy career in the labour movement. |
With the retirement of Brian Stevens, Unifor National President Jerry Dias announced that National Representative Bruce Snow, who was servicing Unifor members in British Columbia based out of the New Westminster regional office, would replace Brian as Unifor’s National Rail Director. Brother Snow comes out of CN where he spent several years as a Local Chairperson, Regional VP and later President of Local 100 before being appointed to the National staff of the Union.
On May 9th, National Representative Bob Fitzgerald announced that he would be retiring from Unifor and 47 years’ service with CN effective June 1, 2017. Brother Fitzgerald has had a long history of trade union activism since he was hired on with the CNR in 1970, working under Agreement 5.1 in a variety of different jobs and departments. He served as Local Chairperson in the Greater Toronto Area for a number of years before being elected twice as the Regional Representative of CAW National Council 4000’s Great Lakes Region and twice as the President of Council 4000. He was appointed to the staff of the National Union on July 27, 2009. We wish Bob and his lovely wife Liz best wishes and good health and prosperity in the many years ahead.
With the retirement of Bob Fitzgerald, National President Jerry Dias announced that Barry Kennedy, President of Unifor National Council 4000, would replace Brother Fitzgerald as National Representative. Brother Kennedy also comes from out of CN, initially hiring on in Winnipeg and later transferring to Edmonton where he spent several years as Local Chairperson and President of CAW Local 4031 in Alberta which was made up of members from CN and VIA Rail. He was elected to three terms as Regional Representative for Council 4000 until his election as President of Council 4000. He was recently acclaimed to a fourth term at the Council’s 6th triennial convention held in Winnipeg November 25-26, 2016.
Steven Harding, President of Unifor Local 4005, will serve as Interim President of Council 4000 until an election is completed. Brother Harding is an Owner-Operator with CN Transportation Ltd. (CNTL) based in Moncton, New Brunswick. Nominations were posted for Council 4000 President to close on June 16, but the National Election Committee has extended the deadline to July 3, 2017. Ken Hiatt, President of Local 100, announced last year that he would not seek another term as President of the Local. Instead, Brother Hiatt will retire from Local 100 and from CN where he has been employed for over 41 years. He started his career with CN in The Pas, Manitoba as a machinist before transferring to Winnipeg in 1992. Brother Hiatt was Chairperson of the Unifor Rail Industry Council and served on the Unifor National Executive Board for the past three years. We thank Brother Hiatt for his many years of contributions with the Union and wish he and his wife Patsy good health and prosperity in many years of retirement.
Replacing Brother Hiatt will be Terry McKimm, who is presently the Regional VP of Local 100 for the Prairie Region based in Winnipeg. Brother McKimm will become the President of Local 100 as of July 1, 2017.
And finally, replacing Brother Hiatt as Chairperson of the Unifor Rail Industry Council will be Jennifer Murray, Regional Representative of National Council 4000 servicing the Council’s diverse Local 4005 membership in Atlantic Canada. Local 4005 have grown to 756 members. Sister Murray comes out of VIA Rail in Moncton, New Brunswick, where she has held a number of positions with the Corporation.
